Not gonna lie, skincare has gotten so bloody complicated. Every brand’s out there banging on about some magical ingredient that’s gonna fix your life overnight. Like… can we just slow down for a second? I am sure that half the time you’re standing there in the skincare aisle online thinking “what even is this stuff!?”.

That’s honestly why I am all for Aussie made skincare! And I’m not just saying that cause I am Aussie and run an Aussie skincare brand. It actually means something. It means that I know who’s making the stuff I’m putting on my skin, I know it’s been properly made and I’m not putting any random crap on my face. I don’t have time to waste and I have dealt with skin drama for years. Acne, sensitivity, all of it! So yes, I’m picky and I want stuff I can actually trust!

Why A Skincare Routine Matters (Even If You’re 22)

Let’s paint a picture… You’re 22. Your skin is doing alright. Some hormonal breakouts maybe? Or a random pimple here and there. It’s annoying but you’ve survived worse. And you’re probably thinking… do I really need a skincare routine right now? Short answer is YES. Long answer is also… YES! Let me unpack why for you.  Your Skin’s Got a Memory Like an Elephant 🐘 Your skin might look fine now, but your skin remembers everything. Every late night, every Sunday that you passed out on your bed with your makeup on. Every summer day, enjoying the beach but skipping SPF because it was a little cloudy anyway. All of it gets logged.  It doesn’t always show up straight away, that’s the trap. But five or even 10 years from now, you’ll start noticing pigmentation, weird little fine lines and unusual texture, or skin that just won’t bounce back like it used to.  And I’m not here to create fear of ageing because I honestly believe ageing is a privilege. But looking after your skin now is equal to giving future you a head start. No panic lasers or peels and no “why didn’t I start earlier” regrets. Something simple like Vitamin C or Hyaluronic Acid – it really depends on your skin That’s it! Simple. Prevention Is the Real Flex I don’t know how many times I can say trust me but trust me. Trying to fix deep lines, stubborn sun damage and skin that’s lost its bounce is expensive and sooo hard. Prevention? That’s the real power move.  Doing the bare minimum now pays off big time later. Your skin barrier stays strong. You get fewer breakouts... Makeup sits a lot better and when the ageing stuff does start (and it will it’s the circle of life right), your skin will not freak out on you. It will just keep doing its thing, because you have trained it for this.  And Let’s Be Real, Your 20s Are a Lot UNI, work, breakups, hormones, party all night, work all day. Crappy sleep patterns, spicy food, way too much coffee, maybe not enough water. Stress while you are trying to work out this thing called life.  Your skin is feeling all of it. And you’re throwing on three different exfoliants, a TikTok concoction, and whatever that girl with glass skin swore by last week, your skin will get confused. It will be screaming internally.  So don’t punish it. Give it consistency. Some TLC and just be chill with it.  Skincare Is Not Just About Skin Yep, we want to protect our skin and keep it healthy and happy. But it’s also about YOU. That 3–5-minute routine morning and night is sometimes the only part of the day that’s quiet. The only thing you might be doing for you amongst all the madness of your 20s. Your deep breath and reset.  And when your skin feels good, you feel so much better. You show up different and you carry yourself different. There’s just something about glowy skin that hits different.  What Your Starter Routine Should Look Like We are not about gatekeeping (and we aren’t just using that word cause its trending, we mean it). Here’s what I’d start with if I was 22 again. 1.    CleanseAM and PM. Something gentle and non-stripping and cleanse the skin for at least 30 seconds to one minute.2.    Optional SerumPick ONE that suits your skin concern. Hyaluronic acid for hydration, azelaic acid for breakouts or Vitamin C for brightening. Keep it simple. 3.    MoisturiseYour skin needs hydration even if its oily. Keep it light.4.    SPF 30+Every morning. No excuses. And we are all grown now so we know if we are spending prolonged time in the sun, we should be topping up every 3-4 hours.  When You Are Ready, Level Up You can start adding to your routine: •    Vitamin C after hyaluronic acid in the mornings•    Retinol, but slowly and after 25 if texture prevention is your vibe. Use it in the PM only by swapping it out with your other serums, you don’t want to be mixing too many actives with this one. •    A weekly exfoliant no more than 2 times a week. Nothing harsh something simple and light on the skin barrier Final Thoughts: It’s Not About Perfection, It’s About Progress No one is asking or expecting you to be perfect. You’ll still sleep in your makeup sometimes. You might forget your SPF from time to time, and you will try products you saw on social media that turn your skin into a flaky mess. It’s fine.  Skincare is like brushing your teeth. You don’t do it because they are dirty, you do it so they stay healthy. So, whether your skin is clear right now or it’s a little chaotic, it deserves care not punishment. Just small, consistent habits that will protect your glow for a long time. Okay, let’s talk acne AND be honest about it. If you’ve ever found yourself 14videos deep into “how to fix your acne” TikTok’s, scanning ingredients like a full time job, or double cleansing with six different products just to feel something… you’re not alone. But what if I told you that sometimes doing less is actually the answer? Yep, I know it sounds counterintuitive. Acne feels like the kind of thing that you need to throw everything at. But in reality, going overboard can do more harm than good. Let’s break this down without all the sciency buzz words and I’ll walk you through why skin minimalism might be the real glow up you need.  1.    Your Skin Barrier = The Bouncer at the Club Think of your skin barrier like a really good security guard. It’s there to keep the good stuff (hydration, nutrients) in and the bad stuff (irritants, bacteria, pollution) out.  But if you’re hitting your barrier with harsh scrubs, too many actives and acids in a 15 step routine every night, that poor barrier of yours is waving a white flag. And once it’s compromised, everything starts to go downhill. Breakouts, redness, dryness, stinging… any of that sound familiar? Your Move? Back it up. Choose products that support your barrier. Look for things like: •    Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) is calming and barrier strengthening •    Glycerin pulls hydration into the skin like a magnet•    Ceramides help patch up the skin barrier like a pro(Ceramides are fatty molecules that make up over 50% of your skin barrier. They are the glue that holds your skin together and keep moisture in and irritants out. Some examples of ceramide ingredients are: Cetearyl Olivate, Sodium Hyaluronate and Macadamia Seed Oil) Sometimes, less noise = more clarity. And that applies to your skin too.  2.    Stripping Your Skin = Sending It Into Panic Mode You know that tight, squeaky clean feeling after washing your face? Yeh… that’s not a win. That’s your skin crying out for help.  When you strip away your skins natural oils (and yes this happens way more than you think and also why we aren’t lovers of skin toner), your skin goes into survival mode. It produces more oil to compensate, which can lead to clogged pores, greasiness and you guessed it… more breakouts! Instead, try a cleanser that: •    Doesn’t foam up like a car wash•    Leaves your skin feeling clean and soft, not tight•    Has hydrating ingredients like aloe vera, sunflower oil, cocamidopopyl (a gentle coconut derives ingredient) Your face is not a frying pan! It doesn’t need to be squeaky. Just clean and calm. 3.    Too Many Actives = Skin Chaos Just because an ingredient is good, it doesn’t mean your skin wants all of them at once.  Retinols, AHAs (water soluble acids that exfoliate to brighten and smooth) , BHAs (Oil soluble acids that penetrate deeper to clear pores of excess oils and dead skin), Vitamin C, Azelaic Acid… they all have a purpose. But layering them up like it’s some kind of ingredient buffet is how you will end up with confused, red, flaky skin. Real Talk: Acne prone skin is usually sensitive skin. It doesn’t need 5 strong actives fighting for attention on the face. It needs calm and consistent support.  A better approach: Pick 1 – 2 heroes. If breakouts are your main thing, try azelaic acid or niacinamide. For texture post-acne marks, introduce a gently retinol slowly. Not all at once. Not every night. Let your skin breath and allow the skincare ingredients to do their job. 4.    Skin Has a Rhythm (And Yours Might Just Need a Beat to Catch Up) Our skin is constantly regenerating (that means shedding dead skin cells and creating new ones) every 4 – 6 weeks. So if you’re changing your routine every time a new trend hits? You are interrupting that whole process and not allowing your products the time to do their thing. And when your skin doesn’t get time to adjust, you don’t get results. You just get irritated skin and possibly more breakouts.  Why consistency always wins: •    Retinol and azelaic acid can take 6 – 12 weeks to show real results•    Constantly swapping products will always equal constantly confused skin •    Sticking to a routine lets your skin heal instead of reacting Skin isn’t a quick fix situation. It’s more like a long term relationship. You’ve gotta stick around, communicate and give it time to blossom and flourish.  5.    Rest Days Are a Thing  Ever had a day where you just couldn’t be bothered? Good. Your skin probably feels the same way sometimes.  Enter Skin Fasting This doesn’t mean ditching skincare all together. It just means having a 1 or 2 nights a week where you go back to the basics: cleanser, moisturiser, bed. That’s it.  It gives your skin space to breathe, reset and do its own thing without a million products shouting over each other.  The Real Routine That Works For Acne Prone Skin (And Yes It’s Surprisingly Simple) 1.    Gentle Cleanser. Nothing harsh, nothing stripping2.    One Treatment Serum. Think azelaic acid with niacinamide3.    Barrier Loving Moisturiser. Hydrating, calming and non-comedogenic4.    SPF 30+. Every. Single. Day. Please we’re actually begging lol Final Thoughts: You Don’t Need More, You Need Smarter The skincare industry is loud and will always try to sell you the “next big thing”.
