🧪 An honest comparison — a soothing 15%, or a true 20% with niacinamide
An Honest Comparison

Helloskin vs Facetheory

Facetheory's Blemicalm 15% is the closest competitor here on strength — a true 15% azelaic (most rivals stop at 10%), cushioned with colloidal oat, aloe, rosehip and green tea, vegan and thoughtfully clean. Real credit for the dose and the soothing. But it's still short of our 20%, it has no niacinamide, and its "BHA" is an emollient, not an exfoliant. Here's the breakdown — no spin, just chemistry.

The Science

15% soothed, or 20% with niacinamide?

Facetheory did something most brands don't — pushed past 10% to a true 15%, and cushioned it with oat, aloe and rosehip. It's the closest serum here to our strength, and gentler with it. We go one step further to a true 20% and add a real 10% niacinamide and an active BHA.

Facetheory
15%

soothed & nourishing

A true 15% azelaic with colloidal oat, aloe, rosehip seed oil and green tea — vegan, clean and genuinely soothing. Stronger than most rivals, but below 20%, with no niacinamide and only an emollient salicylate, not an active BHA.

Helloskin
20%

stronger + niacinamide

A true 20% azelaic with 10% Niacinamide, an active salicylic-acid assist and Ferulic Acid + Vitamin E — the higher dose, plus a fuller active line-up.

Credit where it's due: 15% is a genuinely strong, well-cushioned dose, and the oat-rosehip base is more nourishing and lower-fragrance than ours. We answer with a higher 20%, a real niacinamide and an active BHA.

The Math

What each label delivers.

Closest on azelaic; different on the rest.

Facetheory is the closest on azelaic — 15% vs our 20% — and more soothing. But we're higher-dose and add a real 10% niacinamide and an active BHA it doesn't have.

The Benchmark

Prescription-strength azelaic, without the prescription.

Dermatologists prescribe azelaic acid at 15–20% (Skinoren is 20%, Finacea 15%). Most over-the-counter serums stop at 10% — half. We run a full, true 20%, on the shelf, no script.

Strength
20%

True azelaic acid — the prescription ceiling

The same 20% concentration a dermatologist prescribes as Skinoren, in a cosmetic serum you can just buy — paired with 10% Niacinamide and a salicylic-acid (BHA) assist.

Form
0grit

Dissolved, not suspended or "derivative"

Real azelaic acid, carried in a light Undecane/Tridecane serum base that spreads clean — not a gritty silicone suspension, and not a milder Potassium Azeloyl Diglycinate stand-in.

Azelaic acid is dose-dependent and a higher percentage is stronger — it can also be more active on sensitive or rosacea-prone skin, so patch-test and build up slowly. Not medical advice; azelaic acid at these levels is a cosmetic ingredient here, not a substitute for prescribed treatment.

Helloskin wins 9 of 15
Facetheory is the closest here on strength (a true 15%) and genuinely soothing with oat and rosehip, vegan and lower-fragrance — three real wins. But it's still below 20%, has no niacinamide, and its salicylate is an emollient, not an active BHA. We go higher and fuller.

Being Fair

What Facetheory gets right.

A fair amount. Facetheory pushed to a true 15% azelaic when almost everyone else stops at 10% — the closest serum here to our strength — and cushioned it well with colloidal oat, aloe, rosehip seed oil and green tea. It's vegan, lower-fragrance than ours, and nourishing. If you want a strong-but-soothing azelaic with a botanical, clean-beauty leaning, it's a genuinely good serum.

Where we pull ahead is the last step of dose and the actives around it. Ours is a true 20% versus their 15%; we add a real 10% niacinamide (they have none) and an active salicylic acid, where their Butyloctyl Salicylate is an emollient, not an exfoliant. They win soothing, a nourishing oil base and lower fragrance; we win dose, niacinamide and a true BHA.

Common Questions

What people actually ask.

Is 20% much stronger than Facetheory's 15%?
It's a step up, not a leap — 15% is already a strong, prescription-adjacent dose, and it's the closest rival here. Our 20% is the ceiling dermatologists prescribe, and we add niacinamide and an active BHA on top. If 15% soothed suits you, theirs is good; for maximum azelaic, ours.
Does Facetheory have a BHA like Helloskin?
Not an active one. Its Butyloctyl Salicylate is a salicylic-derived emollient (for slip and feel), not an exfoliating BHA. Ours contains actual salicylic acid to help with congestion.
Facetheory is gentler — does that matter?
For reactive skin, yes — its oat-and-aloe base and lower fragrance are kinder, and 15% is a touch milder than 20%. Ours is stronger and contains fragrance, so patch-test. Different points on the strength-vs-comfort line.
Which should I choose?
Want strong azelaic that's still soothing, vegan and nourishing? Facetheory's 15% is a great pick. Want the highest true dose plus niacinamide and an active BHA? Helloskin's 20% at $39.99.
